Celebrating Our Shared History
In 2001, the Town of Meaford, the Township of St. Vincent, and the Township of Sydenham were brought together as one municipality. This change happened through Ontario’s municipal restructuring process, creating a single community with shared services and governance.
In 2026, we are celebrating 25 years since that amalgamation. Throughout the year, we will reflect on the history of the former townships and honour how they shaped the community we know today. We are also highlighting the villages and hamlets that make the Municipality of Meaford what it is today, while looking ahead to building our shared future together.
Historical Background
Township of Sydenham
Established in the mid-1800s, Sydenham Township was known for its rural landscapes, farming communities, and early settlement patterns shaped by creeks, concession lines, and small hamlets. Its residents contributed significantly to early industry and agricultural development.
Township of St. Vincent
St. Vincent Township developed along the shoreline, with strong ties to fishing, shipping, and early trade. Its villages and crossroads communities reflected a blend of agricultural life and Georgian Bay’s maritime influence.
Town of Meaford
With its deep harbour, mills, and bustling main street, the Town of Meaford emerged as a commercial and cultural hub in the region. Over time, the town grew into a centre for business, arts, and community life, serving neighbouring rural areas and shaping the broader identity of the municipality.
Amalgamation
In 2001, these three unique municipalities united to become the Municipality of Meaford, combining their histories, strengths, and communities. This 25th anniversary commemorates not only that moment but the shared journey since—one defined by collaboration, resilience, and community spirit.

Greenfield has written a play based on historical reports of the sinking of the SS Asia on Georgian Bay in 1882. The disaster marked the greatest loss of life ever witnessed on the Bay. One of only two survivors was a young woman from Bognor, Christina Anne Morrison. Her heroic and traumatic story is one that needs to be told and remembered.
