Frequently Asked Questions about Wireless Internet

FAQ on Wireless Internet

FAQ on Wireless Internet

What is wireless?

  • Wireless access uses radio frequency signals to exchange information between your computer and the Internet. No cables are required.

Why wireless?

  • Wireless allows library users to bring their own computers to the library and to access the Internet.  Seating is available in the Reading Room.

How do I use wireless at the library?

  • Bring your own laptop computer with a built-in WiFi network card to the library.  The Meaford Public Library uses the WiFi standard.  Speed will vary with number of users.  WiFi printing is available.

Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?

  • No, the library wireless network is open to all visitors.  Ask at the main circulation desk for the current passwords.

What about virus protection and security?

  • It is solely the responsibility of the wireless device owner/user to provide anti-virus protection, and to configure their laptop/PDA settings to provide the appropriate security settings to control access from other wireless devices within the Library and the Internet itself.  The Meaford Public Library will not take responsibility for damages incurred for incorrect, insufficient or incomplete security settings,  or lack of adequate or up-to-date virus protection.  Wireless users assume all risks in this regard.

When I access your wireless, will I have to provide a Library Card?

  • Yes, we would like users to obtain a card.

Since I'm using my own equipment, do the general rules about computer use still apply to me?

  • Yes, you cannot disrupt other patrons, and any activities deemed illegal apply to you whether or not you are on a Library-owned computer or your own computer.  Any illegal activity will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Can the library help me configure my computer?

  • No, every computer is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment.  The Meaford Public Library is not responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings.  If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the manufacturer of your hardware or software.

We have recently had some instance of garbage bag tags being ripped in half, and both halves being placed on two separate garbage bags. Garbage will only be collected if a complete bag tag is present on all waste bags, and by-law enforcement will be contacted if necessary.
