The Municipality of Meaford is pleased to announce that it has adopted Official Plan Amendment (OPA) #16, being an amendment to implement the policy recommendations arising from the Waterfront Strategy & Master Plan. The Waterfront Strategy & Master Plan was endorsed by Council on June 23rd, 2014. The Amendment has now also been approved by the County of Grey and is in force and effect.
Official Plan #16 (Waterfront Strategy Implementation):
Waterfront Strategy & Master Plan
The Municipality of Meaford retained Dillon Consulting to undertake a Waterfront Strategy and Master Plan and the final draft of the resulting Report is available here:
The Meaford Economic Development Strategy identified that Meaford’s tourism traffic is highly seasonal, making it very difficult to sustain a strong tourism business. To address this issue, a number of strategic actions and objectives with respect to the ‘Tourism’ pillar of economic activity are proposed. One such identified strategic action is to preserve and promote the existing attractions of Meaford and to introduce new businesses to the waterfront based on a comprehensive waterfront strategy.
Throughout the past two decades, a number of development proposals and plans have been prepared with respect to the waterfront within the urban area of Meaford. Most recently in 2009, Council approved the Meaford Harbour Strategic Plan, a document which sought to integrate stakeholder input, Official Plan policy objectives, and a review of operational/capital challenges to generate specific strategic directions and actions that will guide the development of the Harbour area in the face of anticipated future development trends and pressures.
While implementation has begun on a number of the strategic actions identified via the Meaford Harbour Strategic Plan, it has been noted that the plan does not address the broader urban waterfront area on a comprehensive basis, nor does it include an optimized concept plan for the Harbour or adjacent waterfront lands. The Waterfront Strategy & Master Plan aims to do this.
