Trails

Georgian Trail

altThe Georgian Trail starts at Meaford's Harbour and runs 34km along highway 26 to Harbourview Park in Collingwood. Much of the trail passes along the beautiful shore of Georgian Bay with ample opportunity to rest or swim along the way.

Trail is rated as an easy and accessible trail which is intended for hiking, cycling, jogging, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and walking. Parking is available at Meaford Harbour or at many convenient entry points along the trail.

Trout Hollow Trail

alt

Trout Hollow Trail is a walking trail that travels through private property along both sides of the Bighead River from the Bakeshop Bridge in Meaford to Riverside Community Centre on the 7th Line.

Parts of the trail are an easy walk while other areas offer a more difficult course due to stream crossing and clay banks. While the trail generally follows the river, passing through cedar groves and old hardwoods, it also climbs out of the valley to pass through meadows and grain fields allowing the hiker spectacular views of the countryside.

Historical remains are found along the river and include: saw mills, grist mills, power dam and power house.

The trail offers easy, moderate and difficult sections as outlined on

the map. The trail is intended for foot traffic only. Parking is available at the both the trailhead on Edwin Street and at Riverside Community Centre on the 7th Line. Additional parking can be found across from the Trailhead at Beautiful Joe Park.

Tom Thomson Trail

tom thomson trailThe Tom Thomson Trail is a 3-season, hiking, cycling and horseback riding route between Meaford and Owen Sound. From Fred Raper Park at Meaford’s waterfront the trail follows paved roads, woodland trails and gravel roads across the Niagara Escarpment and rolling farmland overlooking Georgian Bay.  The varied terrain and many access points over the 40 km route provide opportunities for bird-watchers, mountain bikers, photographers, geo-cachers and hikers.

One of the highlights is passing the historic Leith Church and the cemetery where Tom Thomson is thought to be buried. The suspicious death of this influential Canadian artist in Algonquin Park in 1917 remains a mystery in Canadian history.

Spring, summer and autumn excursions along the Tom Thomson Trail offer changing colours in the hardwood forests, views of century farms along country roads and opportunities to enjoy the unique landscapes of the Niagara Escarpment.

Bruce Trail

alt

The Bruce Trail is Canada's oldest and longest footpath, providing the only continuous public access to the Magnificent Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

The section of trail in our area starts with a trip through the valley of the Bighead River before proceeding along the escarpment to the expansive Bayview Escarpment Nature Reserve.

The trail offers spectacular views of Georgian Bay, waterfalls and provincially rare ferns.

The trail is a foot path only, other uses are only permitted where signage indicates those uses.
